Abstract

Over a period of fifty years the political structure of Taiwan has been changed from an authoritarian regime to a democracy. Its relationship with China has been evolved from rivalries in civil war, to Taiwan’s unilateral termination of hostility towards China up to a relationship of dialogue and cultural exchanges in the 1990s. Maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and promoting peace are both in accord with the common interests of the two sides of the Strait, and the Asia-Pacific region.
